On March 29, 2007, the Shiveluch Volcano, on the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia, erupted. Ashes from the large plume given off by the volcano have since settled, and are easily visible against the white snowy ground. The grayish spread of ashes starts at the base of the volcano and extends east and north.
This image was acquired by the MODIS on the Terra satellite on March 31, 2007. For a view of the volcano erupting, please view this previous image of the day.
