NASA MODIS Image of the Day: April 5, 2012 – Fires in east India
Biomass burning is occurring across a broad section of eastern India, and it was observed by NASA’s Aqua satellite. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies onboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured an image of fires and smoke in eastern India on March 25, 2012 at 07:45 UTC (3:45 a.m. EDT). The fires appear as red squares and smoke from the fires appears a light brown color. Some of the fires and smoke appear to be coming from the Alluri Sitaramaraju Forest Area, west of Visakhapatnam, a city on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Visakhapatnam is a major port city on the south east coast of India. It is the second largest city in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Other forest areas lie further north along the coast, where more smoke and fires were detected. West of Bhubaneswar are the Hindol-Badamba Forest Range, the Khandapada Forest Range, Satkosia Forest Reserve and Badamba Forest Range.
