2. PROGRAM LOGOS AND OTHER EMBLEMS

NASA’s Communication Materials Review (CMR) has very specific guidelines regarding the use of logos and emblems. The NASA insignia, commonly referred to as the “meatball,” will be the only NASA identifier on NASA communication material. Therefore, no other identifiers, such as NASA center identifiers or logos or any other type of graphic representation for any project, program, office, experiment, unmanned missions, payloads and others, will be authorized for use on NASA communications materials.

The only exception is astronaut crew emblems. These emblems may be designed by the crew members to be used on items specific to that particular mission, such as crew clothing/uniforms, lapel pins, press kits and crew lithographs. These emblems will not be used on any publications (other than press kits or other documents approved by the assistant administrator for Public Affairs or designee), and will not be used next to or locked-up with the NASA insignia.

The NASA insignia is the only allowable logo for both internal and external communications. It is our prime brand identifier, reflecting the history and tradition of the agency. The insignia must be included on all agency publications, displays, visual communications and markings. Besides the insignia, the other identifier is the agency name spelled out as “National Aeronautics and Space Administration.” Combining the insignia and the agency name in a specific identifier configuration maintains a consistent part of our brand identity. NASA must be spelled out on one line in the upper left corner in initial caps and lowercase. The exception is if there is no room to fit it all on one line due to product size. The insignia should appear in the upper right corner of the communications material. There are specific layout guidelines and usage examples in the NASA Style Guide.

NASA funds will not be used to design, produce or distribute individual logos regardless of whether they are for internal or external use as per the NASA CMR Board. The full NASA Style Guide can be found on the CMR Web site: http://communications.nasa.gov
