Description

The California Institute of Technology’s (Caltech) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) near Pasadena, California, operating under a prime contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), seeks industry interest in solid propellant motor drop test research. JPL is responsible for quantifying the blast and blast driven fragment environments resulting from launch vehicle accidents for missions using nuclear power systems. The Laboratory desires to conduct research into these blast and fragment environments for the fallback of an intact, non-burning solid propellant motor impacting the ground at vertical velocities in the range of 200 to 500 ft/s. The motors could contain up to 4400 lb. of DOT hazard class 1.3C solid propellant. The contractor shall provide the facilities and methods for simulating the accident scenario, and characterizing the blast and blast driven fragments (both motor case and solid propellant) emanating from the exploding motor. RESPONSES DUE: Please indicate your interest and qualifications in responding to this synopsis to JPL no later than Monday, February 27, 2012 by submitting your (1) company name; (2) point of contact; (3) mailing address; (4) E-mail address; and (5) phone number. DISCLAIMER: It is emphasized that the requested information is for preliminary purposes only and does not constitute a commitment, implied or otherwise, that JPL will solicit you for such a procurement in the future. Neither JPL nor the government will be responsible for any costs incurred by you in furnishing this information. Prospective subcontractors are advised that any information provided shall be deemed to be furnished with unlimited rights to JPL, with JPL assuming no liability for any accidental disclosure, use or reproduction of such data.
