NASA ISS Expedition 12 Science Operations Status Report for the Week Ending December 23, 2005
Expedition 12 Commander and NASA Science Officer Bill McArthur operated the Capillary Flow Experiment-Contact Line. Capillary flow is the key process used to move fluids in a microgravity environment. The Contact Line portion of the experiment examines the interface between the liquid and solid surface of the container.
The experiment investigates capillary flows and flows of fluids in containers with complex geometries. Results could be used by designers of low gravity fluid systems in future spacecraft.
Educational Payload Operations activities also were conducted by the science officer. These demonstrations focused on habitat-themed activities such as recycling and spacesuit hardware. These demonstrations were recorded for later use in NASA educational products.
NASA’s payload operations team at the Marshall Center coordinates U.S. science activities on Space Station.
