NASA GSFC Internal Memo From Ed Weiler: Management Announcements

Colleagues:

A couple of weeks ago, I sent out a Center-wide message announcing that with the pending retirement of Dolly Perkins at the end of the year, Laurie Leshin will be taking on a new role at Goddard as the Deputy Center Director for Science and Technology. Today, I’d like to announce the appointment of Dr. Bernard Seery to a new post in Code 100 as the Assistant Director for Advanced Concepts. I am also pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Hildebrand, Chief, Hydrospheric and Biospheric Sciences Laboratory, will succeed Bernie as the new Deputy Director for the Sciences and Exploration Directorate.

While Goddard has had a number of recent successes in the development of new mission concepts, to ensure our continued success, we need to increase our emphasis on the early formulation of new science and exploration architectures and mission concepts. Bernie will work with those across the Center who are engaged in concept development efforts to bring extra focus to this critical area. Bernie has a proven track record in developing new mission and instrument concepts, having served as the Deputy for Advanced Planning and Director of the Advanced Planning and Integration Office at NASA Headquarters. He has held a number of key positions during his 14-plus years at Goddard and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge about the Center’s strengths and capabilities to this new position.

Peter brings strong Earth science leadership to the SED front office. The scientists and technologists in his lab are at the forefront of research into the earth’s changing climate. The lab houses some of the nation’s leading researchers in the fields of the Earth’s hydrosphere and water cycle, including the cryosphere, land surface hydrology and biology, biological and physical oceanography, coastal zone processes and ecology, atmospheric precipitation and moisture, plus the techniques for observing, modeling and prediction of these processes.
