The NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) continues to move forward with its implementation of the Facilities Master Plan. One of the activities of the plan is to proceed with the deconstruction of obsolete structures, beginning with Building 2.

As part of our deconstruction process for Building 2, GSFC must consult with stakeholders, as noted under the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s regulations, 36 CFR Part 800, implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended.

A recent evaluation of Building 2 recognizes that the building may be eligible to be listed in the National Register. Regulations require identifying and assessing the effects of any proposed actions on historic properties.

The Center wishes to capture and celebrate the history of Building 2, and seeks input and comments from current or past Goddard employees local government, local historical societies, and groups with a specific interest in the history of space flight, as well as the general public.

GSFC will be accepting public comments until May 28, 2011.
