NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) contracted for a modification of the Space Shuttle flown Cell Culture Module (CCM) hardware for certification and use on the International Space Station (ISS) in order to conduct on-orbit biology research.

This Space Shuttle-proven technology will enable long duration research with an automated system that also allows ISS crew intervention. The modification of the existing CCM will enable leveraging on existing technologies and hardware to fit within the limited time schedule and budget available to meet the near-term need date for use on-orbit. The resultant ISS certified hardware will preserve flight qualified and proven systems while reconfiguring the architecture for individual access to the biology for experiment initiation, refurbishment or sample storage and preservation.

The Cell Culture Module shall be used to culture eukaryotic and prokaryotic specimens to conduct cellular and microbiological experiments, biotechnology discovery studies, biotechnology bioassays, and pharmaceutical therapy validation studies on ISS. The Cell Culture Module will be a comprehensive incubation system with the capability to provide the scientist with the ability to conduct end-to-end specimen culturing and bio-treatments, as would be conducted for a similar experiment in the home laboratory. This capability will include the ability to run multiple iterations of the experiment in parallel for statistical analyses.
