Message from the Center Director
Opportunity to attend ISU Program in China
I am very pleased to announce an opportunity to send Ames employees to two exciting educational and professional development programs in Beijing, China this summer: 1) The 2007 Summer Session Program of the International Space University (ISU) in Beijing China (June 25 – August 24); and 2) ISU’s two-week Space Odyssey Institute also in Beijing (July 8 – 20). This is a unique opportunity for the Center to invest strategically in our future, and to further strengthen Ames’ position as a world-class institution. Since ISU’s deadline to apply to both programs is March 31st, we must move quickly to identify promising candidates.
I have personally been involved with ISU as a Faculty member for many years. I assure you that it is an incredible opportunity of learning for promising space professionals. During the 2006 ISU Summer Session Program, I chaired a project called Luna Gaia. The project team designed a closed-loop life cycle system for a lunar base, a very relevant project to NASA’s current objectives.
Please find details about the opportunity below. I encourage you to spend time on ISU’s website to learn more about both programs and Summer Program’s team projects.
Sincerely,
S. Pete Worden
Center Director
Background:
The International Space University provides graduate-level training to the future leaders of the emerging global space community. Since its founding in 1987, ISU has graduated more than 2400 students from 93 countries. Together with hundreds of ISU faculty and lecturers from around the world, ISU alumni comprise an extremely effective network of space professionals and leaders that actively facilitates individual career growth, professional activities and international space cooperation.
The International Space University (ISU) hosts a nine-week “Summer Session Program” (SSP) each year to teach approximately 120 rising space professionals about the space sector in an international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary setting. The SSP changes location each year. This year, the19th annual SSP will be in Beijing, China. The course is unique in providing the most comprehensive overview of all aspects of the space field, from orbital dynamics and launch systems, to legal and policy issues. In addition, the network of International Space University alumni permeates the space field. The team projects students work on have had considerable impact. Please visit the ISU website for additional information. http://www.isunet.edu/.
The Space Odyssey Institute is a “12-day short course is designed to meet the needs of experienced professionals from mid-level to senior leadership positions in the international aerospace community.” See this link for more information on the Space Odyssey Institute: http://www.isunet.edu/EN/585
Eligibility:
This opportunity is available to all qualified Ames employees. My intention is to select 2 – 3 Ames employees by March 9, 2007. Selected Ames employees will then need to submit an application directly to ISU by March 31, 2007 for either the 9-week Summer Program or the 2-week Space Odyssey Institute. Please note that ISU’s eligibility requirements for the Summer Program and Institute are different. Serious applicants are encouraged to review the ISU application requirements on the ISU website and begin to prepare their submission to the appropriate program.
The Center will cover tuition and travel for the selected employees to the Summer Session Program and the Space Odyssey Institute [Note: Contractual processes and funding options are currently being worked out for eligible contractors. Interested contract employees are strongly encouraged to apply]
