Minutes of Senior Staff and Center Directors’ Meeting 20 Feb 2001

The following documents the discussions addressed at the Senior Staff and
Center Directors’ Meeting on February 20, 2001. Mr. Goldin attended the
meeting. Action assignments have been placed in brackets [ ] for easy
identification.

1. AA Reports

P/Cleggett: Last week, coverage as a result of the NEAR touchdown on
Eros was outstanding. It was front-page news on every major newspaper
and made all the network evening and morning news programs.

L/Kerwin:

1) Congress is in recess this week for the Presidents’ Day work
period.

2) Staff from the Virginia Delegation will visit LaRC on Friday,
February 23 for a tour and briefing.

K/Thomas: The annual NASA/JPL High Tech Small Business Procurement
Conference will be held from February 28 to March 2 in Los Angeles,
California. In the past, the conference has drawn as many as 1,500
attendees.

AO/Holcomb: On February 21 and 22, the Agency, Enterprise, and Center
Chief Information Officers (CIO’s) will be meeting in a workshop to
discuss roles and functions and to examine how the CIO team can work
better together.

2. Center Directors

DFRC/Petersen: Dryden hosted the NASA Security Officers conference last
week, headed by Mark Borsi from NASA Headquarters, with excellent
participation from the Centers.

GSFC/Diaz: GSFC received an Award of Excellence from the
Baltimore/Washington

Chamber of Commerce for our contributions to higher education.

JSC/Abbey

1) The STS-102 Countdown Demonstration Test in Florida was
successful.

2) The STS-98 Shuttle is scheduled for 2:02 pm EST. If the weather
does not cooperate in Florida, an Edwards landing will be the next
option.

3) The Flight Readiness Review for STS-102 is scheduled for February
27, 2001. Launch is on schedule for March 8, 2001.

4) Space Station is performing well.

3. Mr. Goldin

1) Mr. Goldin thanked everyone for the progress made during Friday’s
Senior Management Council meeting. He asked Codes R, S, Y, and U to
support Code M in terms of people and facilities regarding issues
associated with the Space Station. Space Station is an Agency priority.
He reiterated that any funding issues will be resolved within the HEDS
Enterprise. He asked to see more details on the Code R Center strategic
planning proposals and those for JPL. He would also like to see more
thoughtful and detailed responses from Codes S, U and Y in terms of what
is core to the Agency, and what can be transferred, deferred or
cancelled. This meeting was one in a series of ongoing strategic
discussions. Immediate budget related issues must be resolved this week
since the President’s Blueprint will be released on February 27, 2001.
Mr. Goldin wants assurance that our core programs are assigned adequate
resources (people, money, and facilities) and realistic schedules to
allow them to succeed.

2) Mr. Goldin commended Code M for putting safety first in landing
the STS-98 Space Shuttle.
