The Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) project, within the NASA Integrated Systems Research Program, is a 6-year project ending in FY15. ERA is maturing technology focused on simultaneously reducing fuel burned, oxides of nitrogen emissions and community noise profiles of passenger and cargo transport aircraft. Over the next 3 fiscal years, the anticipated research will be conducted to mature technologies from technology readiness level (TRL) of 4 to TRL 5 or 6, with an emphasis on those technologies that can be matured to a higher technology maturation level and those that have demonstrated commercial viability in the 2020 to 2025 timeframe.

The NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) is currently developing plans for system-level research efforts for the ERA Project. NASA has developed its plans internally and would like to obtain comments and observations from the external community, based on future technology plans. The purpose of this one-day meeting is for the ERA Project to discuss the following items and to present a strategy for feedback and discussion:

* Mature technologies focused on simultaneously reducing fuel burned, oxides of nitrogen emissions and community noise profiles of passenger and cargo transport aircraft from technology readiness level (TRL) of 4 to TRL 5 or 6, with an emphasis on those that have demonstrated commercial viability in the 2020 to 2025 timeframe;

* Identify 5 technical focus areas and associated technical challenges to be addressed during FY13-FY15 through integrated systems research;

* Determine the potential impact of these technologies on advanced conventional and alternative aircraft designs; and

* Determine the potential impact of these technologies if successfully implemented into the air transportation system.

Additional information with respect to the ERA planning process is available here.
