Help Save Human Mars Exploration Funding – UPDATE

There has been a tremendous outpouring of support over the last few
weeks for our efforts to restore the human Mars exploration funds that
were recently eliminated by NASA Administrator Dan Goldin to feed
Space Station overruns. Numerous chapters of the Mars Society have
taken up the challenge and are contacting their Congresspeople and
NASA. In addition, we have been contacted by individuals from around
the country who have declared their support for our cause, and who
have expressed their willingness to write letters, make phone calls,
and tell others to do the same.

We need to keep up this pressure. We need to show Congress and NASA
that we do not intend to let up until these programs are restored. The
United States needs a manned space program that is going somewhere,
not stuck forever in low Earth orbit. Three decades of stagnation are
enough.

Rather than shut down the tiny amount of human Mars technology
development work currently underway, such funding should be
significantly expanded. We must tell Congress that a program should be
funded at a level of at least $140 million per year (about 1% of
NASA’s current budget) within the NASA HEDS organization, to develop
the technologies necessary for human Mars exploration missions.

You can gain access to a sample letter, our briefing book, and other
resources at the Operation Congress website

Convention Displays and Vendors

We will have a limited amount of space available for displays and
vendors, but it will be top quality space with high traffic.

Individuals or organizations may rent space at the rate of $1000 per
table or $500 for half. All private displays and vendors must be
preapproved for appropriate content. Corporate donors – your donation
of $5000 to support the convention entitles you to a full table plus
up to 5 conference admissions.

There is no charge for chapters or task force groups wishing to erect
a display at the convention. However, due to space constraints,
chapters wishing to vend merchandise will need to share the HQ table.
Chapters must provide staff to sell their items and sales must be
segregated from HQ sales. We will try to display as many items as we
can with equanimity.

Please book your space no later than July 1. Request should be sent
to mzubrin@aol.com

Convention Call for Papers

It’s time to start sending your abstracts in. As in prior years, we
will strive to accept as many abstracts as possible, providing content
is relative to Mars exploration and fairly logical in nature.
Absences of scheduled speakers have caused some dissatisfaction in the
past, so this year, due to popular demand, we will be adding a
confirmation of attendance process for the presenters.

The preferred method of receiving abstracts is via email. If you are
not using a windows system, pasting the content into your email works
fine.

Send your 300 word abstract to:

California in August

Unlike many parts of California, the Stanford/Silicon Valley area
enjoys a relatively mild climate in August. Located on a broad
peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay, the
area is cooled somewhat by the ocean. Temperatures in August range
from the mid-70’s to the mid-80’s and generally dry.

The campus is laid back, lovely and comfortable. Come prepared for
some modest walking.
