Description

The California Institute of Technology’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Caltech/JPL), operating under a prime contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), seek responses to an electronic Request for Proposal (RFP) for a Variable Tilt Terrain Platform (VTTP) for the Mars Science Laboratory Touchdown Dynamics Testbed. JPL, located in Pasadena, California, will launch a rover to Mars in 2009. The rover is expected to arrive in 2010 and will be delivered to the Mars surface using a new Entry, Descent and Landing System. The rover will use a rocket powered descent stage to lower the rover safely to the surface directly onto its wheels. The VTTP to be procured will provide the terrain conditions for testing the rover’s new landing technique. The VTTP is needed to quickly and accurately vary the terrain characteristics that the test system will encounter during the touchdown event. A competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) for this effort was posted electronically to JPL’s web site on January 19, 2005.

The RFP, related documents and attachments (e.g., specimen contract, exhibits, etc.) can be access at: http://acquisition.jpl.nasa.gov/rfp/
