The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) No. EW-2692-945461, entitled “Bose-Einstein-Condensate Cold Atom Laboratory Science Definition Team.” The announcement solicits proposals from potential members of the Science Definition Team from U.S. science community who shall evaluate science objectives and review technical implementations of the Bose-Einstein Condensate Cold Atom Laboratory (BECCAL) mission. Participation is open to all categories of U.S. institutions, including educational institutions, industry, nonprofit organizations, NASA Centers and other Government agencies.

The BECCAL facility on the International Space Station (ISS) will perform experiments in free fall in microgravity on timescales inaccessible on the ground. The facility will be developed through a cooperation between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It will allow scientists to perform experiments in atom optics, physics of quantum degenerate gases and their mixtures without the effects of gravity. In particular, it will offer better atom interferometer implementations on the ISS with precision science measurements. The experiments are also motivated by future high precision matter wave experiments in fundamental physics and applications in Earth observation and space physics. Therefore, it will allow scientists to study and employ different methods and phenomena such as evaporation, Bose-Einstein condensation, delta-kick collimation, atom interferometry and the physics of atomic mixtures.

The full text of the solicitation is available on the JPL Acquisition Opportunities homepage at https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/acquisition/opportunities/rfp/ew-2692-945461/. Questions with regard to responding to this RFP can be addressed to the contact referenced in the full solicitation document.

Please note that your proposal is due at JPL no later than June 26, 2017, 3:00 pm Pacific Time.

Your participation in this solicitation is greatly appreciated.
