ISS On-Orbit Status 21 Jul 2002

All ISS systems continue to function nominally, except as noted previou
sly.  Today begins Week 7 of Expedition 5.



Second weekend off-duty/rest day for the crew.



FE-2 Sergei Treschev performed the regular daily routine maintenance of the
SM environment control and life support system (SOSh), while CDR Valery Kor
zun took the weekly data readings of the SVO water supply and SP toilet flus
h counters for calldown to MCC-Moscow via S-band.



FE-1 Peggy Whitson conducted today’s off-day status checkup of autonomous p
ayloads in the Lab.



All crewmembers completed their daily physical exercise program on TVIS (tr
eadmill), RED (resistive exerciser) and VELO (stationary bike).



Sergei enjoyed a PFC (private family conference) via S-band/audio, while Pe
ggy had her periodic PPC (private psychological conference).



Today’s flight attitude is XPOP Momentum Management all day.



Science Update (Expedition Five — 6th):

The crew was complimented by Lead Increment Scientist Vic Cooley on the
ir excellent work on completing MEPS, getting more photos and collecting sam
ples from ADVASC, as well as working through the MSG/SAMS and SUBSA troubles
hooting.  All systems that are required for SUBSA appear to be in worki
ng order now, and the ground will proceed with runs on Tuesday, 7/23.  
The pictures the crew is sending down of hardware, operations, and the CEO p
rogram are much appreciated.



Extra-Vehicular Activity Radiation Monitors (EVARM):  Next bac
kground radiation reading is scheduled for Thursday, 7/25.



GASMAP/Pulmonary Function in Flight (PuFF):  90-Day GASMAP heal
th check is scheduled for 7/22 and PuFF for 7/23..



Renal (Kidney) Stone Experiment:   Next data collection se
ssion is scheduled for early August.



Interactions (NTXN):  A big ‘thank you’ from the Interactions t
eam to the crewmembers for their continued participation.



Human Research Facility/Workstation (HRF WS):   n/a



Commercial refrigerator incubator module-commercial Stelsys (STELSYS): &
nbsp;Experiment is complete and samples are stowed in frozen state in AR
CTIC-1. "Waiting for a ride home".



Microencapsulation Electrostatic Processing (MEPS): Thanks to the crew from the MEPS team, which can?t wait for PCM (p
rocessing chamber module) return on 9A.



Advanced Astroculture (ADVASC):  ADVASC hardware continues to p
erform nominally and the soybean plants are healthy and growing. Peggy was t
hanked for the photo, it seems that the plants are right on schedule with th
e parallel ground study. But, since there were no flowers, POC will be askin
g for another look in the chamber on 7/23.



Solidification Using a Baffle in Sealed Ampoules (SUBSA):  As a
result of the SUBSA troubleshooting run on 7/18, the ground is now ready to
proceed with the nominal experiment runs scheduled for next week.  POC
is also very glad that SAMS-II troubleshooting on 7/19 was successful. SUBS
A-10 will be processed on 7/23.



Pore Formation and Mobility Investigation (PFMI):  New payload
for Increment 5 has arrived. Will be performed during Stage 9A.



Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS):  SAMS/PIMS is wor
king on identifying several new disturbance signatures.  Hard drive upg
rade was successful.  Activation of new SAMS SE, 121F08 was successful.
 This sensor will support MSG and the MSG experiments SUBSA and PFMI.
 Thanks to Peggy for her efforts on the hard drive upgrade and on the 1
21f08 activation.



Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System (MAMS):  MAMS cont
inues collecting quasi-steady acceleration data.



Active Rack Isolation System (ARIS) Support:  ARIS conducted a
series of tests this week to characterize and improve the ARIS isolation per
formance when commanding ARIS from one command mode to another.  If the
crew noticed any rack motion, it would have been due to these tests.  
Next week, a series of tests will be conducted to characterize the isolation
provided by snubber isolators, which are foam inserts used in place of the
ARIS alignment guides.



Protein Crystal Growth-Single Locker Thermal Enclosure System (PCG-STES)
:  The STES-8 unit is running nominal at 22.0 deg C since transfer.




Materials ISS Experiment (MISSE):  In progress. Deployed outsid
e. Nominal and collecting data.



Educational Payload Operations (EPO):  EPO-5 is coming soon. &n
bsp;No work, just fun!



EarthKAM:   Planned.  Will be performed during Stage
9A.

Zeolite Crystal Growth (ZCG):  Processing of the ZCG science sa
mples was completed last week with the cool-down period ending on 7/20. &nbs
p;The ZCG IZECS (computer) was powered off by the crew on 7/15 after ZCG suc
cessfully downloaded critical data off the ZCG hard drives.   The
removal/stowage of the autoclaves from the furnace was cancelled for Monday’
s (7/22) crew activity with the anticipation of putting seven of the metal a
utoclaves in ARCTIC-2.  Look ahead: The ZCG would like to use ARCTIC 2
to attempt to slow down the degradation of the science samples due to the ex
tended stage.   Details to be sent up soon.



ARCTIC Refrigerator/Freezer 1 (ARCTIC-1):  ARCTIC-1 continues t
o operate nominally, keeping StelSys at -23.5 deg C.



ARCTIC Refrigerator/Freezer 2 (ARCTIC-2):  ARCTIC-2 is powered
on with set-point +21 deg C to dry out the payload volume.  Freezer is
functioning nominally, but water flow to the freezer is still reduced. The A
RCTIC team is working up a troubleshooting plan to determine the source of t
he water flow blockage to ARCTIC-2 with minimum impact to ARCTIC-1.  Tr
oubleshooting and shutdown is expected to occur soon.



Commercial Generic Bioprocessing Apparatus (CGBA):  Will be per
formed during Stage 9A.



Crew Earth Observations (CEO):  The ground appreciates the crew’s cont
inued efforts to acquire imagery despite the limitations imposed by XPOP att
itude.  Another 546 images were received this week bringing the total t
o 2417 to date.  MCC-H is still reviewing and evaluating the imagery. &
nbsp;It appears the crew acquired a number of good thunderstorm photos over
Florida on 7/13.  Thanks to the crew for your support of CRYSTAL-FACE,
especially on an optional day.
