ISS MER Management’s Daily Notes Monday, June 11, 2001 – 12:00 pm
The following notes highlight the ISS activities within the last 24 hours that were discussed during the morning NASA and Boeing management teleconferences, as well as the daily MER Management & Subsystem Tag-Up. These notes are not intended to provide the current configuration of the ISS systems, nor are they intended to capture all of the events that have occurred in the past 24-hour period or that are planned for the next 24-48-hour period. For a detailed overview of the last 24-hour period and upcoming ISS events, refer to the “0800 Report” and “Daily Report”, published by MOD on its Mission Control Center (MCC) website at http://mod.jsc.nasa.gov/mcc (select “Realtime Mission,” then “ISS Msgs”).
EVA: The EVA to relocate the docking cone was completed successfully on Friday. The CDRs bio-med pack did not function prior to the EVA but permission to perform the EVA was given by the Russian FD without it. As a result of the depress to support the EVA, the ISS went out of attitude by 11 degrees. While this is outside the attitude envelope, the time the ISS is permitted to be outside the envelope was not exceeded.
C&C MDMs: All three C&C MDMs are now fully configured with the 7A software load. The C&C MDMs are all considered healthy.
SSRMS: The redundant string remains in operational mode without any transmit/receive errors annunciated. The arm has been in operational mode since June 8. CSA is working on developing additional diagnostic software patches to see if they can isolate the specific error/anomaly that seems to be occurring at the 1553 chipset in the Joint Electronics Unit (JEU). These patches are expected to be complete early-to-mid-week to support additional SSRMS testing on Thursday.
Instructions were provided to the crew on Saturday, June 9, for modifying the Cupola Workstation PCS laptop’s CMOS settings, which may be corrupted. Corruption of these files could have contributed to the DOUG software problems experienced while relocating the SSRMS to the joint maintenance configuration last week. (During relocation, use of the cameras to assist in moving the SSRMS was limited because of problems encountered with the DOUG software).
Ku-Band: Several times over the weekend, a “Ku-Band Radiating Beyond Mask” warning was annunciated. As expected and designed, the Ku-Band TRC (i.e., transmitter) was powered OFF as the sweep approached the mask area. CATO RTPLOT indicates that the PLC went to “Normal” and that the TRC transmit output voltage was at 0 volts. However, within the Mask, a bit flip occurs that shows the Ku-Band is radiating, even though the transmitter voltage has been set to 0 and the Ku-Band is not radiating within the protected Mask. CATO performed CAFN576, “Ku-Band Radiating Beyond Mask Corrective Actions” each time to successfully clear the warning and recover the Ku-Band TRC. Resolution of this issue is being tracked and investigated under IFI MER-0421, “Ku-Band PLC to Normal in Mask”.
PCU Non-Op Patch: Upload of a software patch to the PCUs was planned for today, but MOD requested that the upload be deferred because the software patch had not gone through integrated system testing at the ISIL (although it had gone through Flight Qualification Testing). Upload was planned to occur while the PCUs were in standby mode. However, later today, PCU 2 will be brought into discharge mode later today. PHOENIX and PHALCON coordinated and confirmed that upload of the patch should not impact PCU operation if the upload occurs after the PCU is placed in discharge mode. The tentative date for performing integrated testing of the software patch is Thursday, June 14, with upload to the PCUs to be scheduled thereafter.
Node 1 Smoke Detector: Node 1 Smoke Detector 2 was powered up Friday, June 8, to collect additional data, but it was not enabled. The Smoke Detector did not trip the RPC, but its data is not tracking with the others. Obscuration and scatter levels are much higher than other SDs. Investigation is continuing.
MCA: Two MCA Error Code 33’s occurred over the weekend. The MCA was successfully reset and restored to operation on each occasion.
SSCs – Software Service Pack 4 has been uploaded to the station and is ready to be loaded at the crew’s convenience. The Service Packs are relatively simple upgrades (e.g., drivers) for the software installed on the SSCs.
