DAILY REPORT #2875

PERIOD COVERED: 0000Z (UTC) 05/17/01 – 0000Z (UTC) 05/18/01

Daily Status Report as of 138/0000Z

1.0 OBSERVATIONS SCHEDULED AND ACCOMPLISHED:

1.1 Completed Five Sets of WF/PC-2 8828 (Cycle 9 Supplemental Darks pt3/3)

The WF/PC-2 was used to obtain three dark frames every day to
provide data for monitoring and characterizing the evolution of hot
pixels. The proposal completed with no reported problems.

1.2 Completed WF/PC-2 8723 (A Snapshot Survey of Galactic Globular
Clusters)

The WF/PC-2 was used to observe the crowded centers of globular
clusters {GCs} that heretofore have produced intriguing discoveries of new
phenomena, most of which are not understood theoretically. The
observations completed with no reported problems.

1.3 Completed Six Sets of WF/PC-2 9244 (POMS Test Proposal: WFII
Parallel Archive Proposal Continuation)

The WF/PC-2 was used to perform a generic target version of the
Archival Pure Parallel program. The program will be used to take parallel
images of random areas of the sky, following the recommendations of the
Parallels Working Group. The observations completed with no anomalous
activity.

1.4 Completed Four Sets of WF/PC-2 8815 (Cycle 9 Earth Flats)

The WF/PC-2 was used to monitor flatfield stability. This proposal
obtains sequences of Earth streak flats to construct high quality flat
fields for the WF/PC-2 filter set. These flat fields will allow mapping of
the OTA illumination pattern and will be used in conjunction with previous
internal and external flats to generate new pipeline superflats. The
proposal completed nominally.

1.5 Completed WF/PC-2 8824 (Decontaminations and Associated
Observations Pt. 3/4)

The WF/PC-2 was used for the monthly WFPC2 decons. Also included
are instrument monitors tied to decons: photometric stability check, focus
monitor, pre- and post-decon internals {bias, intflats, kspots, & darks},
UV throughput check, VISFLAT sweep, and internal UV flat check. There were
no reported problems.

**********************************************************

The following scheduled proposals were not completed successfully due to
the STIS safing event:

Three Sets of STIS/CCD 8864 (CCD Dark Monitor-Part 2)

Five Sets of STIS/CCD 9248 (Probing the Large Scale
Structure: Cosmic Shear Observations)

STIS/CCD 8865 (Bias Monitor-Part 2)

STIS/CCD/MA1 8306 (Lyman Alpha Clouds toward PKS1302-102)

STIS/CCD/MA1 8615 (Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of R Coronae Borealis
Stars — Broad Lines from an Accretion Disc?)

Four Sets of STIS/CCD 8845 (Spectroscopic Flats C9)

STIS/CCD 8611 (Observations of Nearby Type Ia Supernovae)

STIS/CCD 8262 (Nuclear Kinematics of the Dense Globular Cluster M-
15)

2.0 FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUMMARY:

2.1 Guide Star Acquisitions:

Scheduled Acquisitions: 6

Successful: 6

As detailed in HSTAR 8226, the acquisition at 137/093044Z defaulted
to fine lock backup on FGS-3 only when the scan step limit was exceeded on
FGS-1. The only proposals executing at the time were those involving STIS.
Scheduled Re-acquisitions: 8

Successful: 8

2.2 FHST Updates:

Scheduled: 15

Successful: 15

2.3 Operations Notes:

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) remains in safe.

Using ROP SR-1A, the SSR EDAC error counter was cleared four times.

Three TTRs were written for degraded data: from 137/084316Z to
137/0846Z, from 137/123226Z to 137/123815Z, and from 138/082416Z to
138/082916Z.

Per HSTAR 8225, OM1EBOXT (MAMA1 Box Temperature) and OM1TUBET (Tube
Temperature) began flagging out-of-limits low, with a value of -0.15 degC,
during the period of a ZOE (137/0843Z to 137/0924Z). The limits for these
items were adjusted at 138/0001Z per an operations request.

A TTR was written for a required re-transmit during a NSSC-1 uplink
at 137/1958Z.

ROP SR-3 was utilized at 137/1950Z to set the SSR playback pointer.

SI C&DH errors were reset at 137/2016Z per ROP NS-5.

During scheduled SSR playback at 137/214530Z, we received a large
number of correctable EDAC errors (DSDCEDC1=84) were received. The
playback completed nominal. The EDAC errors occurred in storage area #2
(ENGR DATA), approx. logical block location 48610. The EDAC error counter
was cleared and the block location where the EDAC errors occurred was
retransmitted (ROP SR_2A at 1372312), data not collected. The correctable
EDAC error occurred again (DSDCEDC1=84). HSTAR 8227 was written.

The CCS status buffer limits were adjusted at 138/0341Z as directed
by ROP DF-18A.

Per ROP NS-3, the NSSC-1 status buffer was dumped at 138/0518Z and
was cleared at 138/0525Z.

3.0 SIGNIFICANT FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

Continuation of normal science observations and calibrations.
