The results on which this Exchange is based were published in the Astrophysical Journal of 20 October 2003.

A mysterious arc of light behind a cluster of galaxies in the constellation of Lynx has turned out to be the biggest, brightest and hottest star-forming region ever seen in space.

The so-called Lynx arc is one million times brighter than the well-known Orion Nebula, a nearby prototypical starbirth region visible in small telescopes. The newly identified mega-star cluster contains a million blue-white stars that are twice as hot as similar stars in our Milky Way galaxy.

It has now been shown that the Lynx arc is actually a mega-star cluster about 12 billion light-years away, far beyond the Lynx cluster. This means that this remote light source existed when the Universe was less than 2 billion years old.

This remarkable object is therefore the closest scientists have come so far to seeing what the primordial objects in the Universe might look like.

New 3-D animations will explain the observations in detail. There are also soundbites with one of the scientists who participated in the work.

This Exchange comprises of a 5 minute A-roll with split audio (English commentary/international sound) and is complimented by a 10-minute B-Roll with clean international sound.
