Global Monitoring for Environment and Security – GMES

ESA TV Exchanges

Background information on the transmission:

Replay: 5 March 12:00-12:15 GMT

Protecting the environment and protecting security of citizens against disasters and the impact of global change are why Europe adopts GMES: Global Monitoring for Environment and Security – a monitoring and observation system that provides timely and quality data and information at global, regional and local level.

GMES is a partnership between the European Space Agency, who provide satellite technology for observing the Earth, and the European Commission, who harmonise and integrate the data; from space and from ground observation, and across existing systems.

In today’s programme, four users of GMES services from academia, public service and United Nations provide insight on the usefulness of this initiative, in areas like marine surveillance, forest fires, global change monitoring, land subsidence, and third-world developmental aid.

The Exchange also includes background footage on these topics.

The script will be on-line as a PDF document under
