**********************************************************

Genesis Mission Outreach E-News provides you with timely information about the Genesis mission, its outreach Web site, and materials and services available from the McREL Genesis Education and Public Outreach (EPO) team. We hope that regular communication will assist us in achieving this goal. We realize that various e-mail programs and versions of Internet browsers handle the links to URLs embedded in this e-newsletter differently. We hope you will be able to navigate easily to the featured sections of the Genesis EPO Web site.

Los Alamos National Laboratory Escapes Fire Damage

Only days ago, the entire country had its eye on Los Alamos, New Mexico, where a controlled burn, fueled by high winds, became a raging forest fire. Many of you have asked about the safety of LANL staff members who serve on the Genesis team. Here is what Roger Wiens, http://www.genesismission.org/people/Wiens/indexWiens.html LANL Genesis project leader, shared with us. “None of the Genesis team members experienced loss or damage to their homes, though some of us were displaced for more than a week, and some team members’ houses were only a few houses away from the destruction. Not one of the LANL facilities used for space hardware was damaged. It appears that all Genesis instruments are in fine shape. As of Tuesday, 5/23, we are all back at work. We appreciate your caring spirit!” We offer sincere regard and concern for those residents of Los Alamos who are displaced or injured in any way as a result of this fire.

Genesis Focus on Scouting

The Genesis mission isn’t just for scientists. There are lots of ways that you can become involved in mission activities. Because we recognize the Girl Scouts of the USA and Boy Scouts of America programs as important in the education of children outside of school, the Genesis outreach Web site features materials that promote learning and achievement for youths. If you know a Girl Scout who plans to earn her Space Exploration Cadette and Senior Interest Patch, or a Boy Scout who would like to earn an Astronomy Merit Badge and/or a Space Exploration Merit Badge, visit the Genesis Scouting page at: http://www.genesismission.org/product/index.html

Meet the People

Chet Sasaki is Genesis project manager at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. He manages the resources, schedules, and cost elements to achieve the objectives of the project. “My primary interest is in implementing the project so that they [the science team] can accomplish their science objectives. The Genesis team translates the science requirements and produces systems such as the spacecraft, SRC [sample return capsule], payload, mission design, and mission operations to achieve that science.” You can meet Chet and learn more about his role as a NASA project manager at http://www.genesismission.org/people/sasaki/sasaki-index.html

Genesis Gram Activity Enters Phase II

The deadline for the Genesis Gram opportunity to send your thoughts into space has passed. All Genesis Grams received have met the criteria for chip engraving and space flight. These Grams arrived from all over the world. There are 36 states in the U.S. represented, as well as 38 foreign countries. All age categories are well represented, with the greatest number of submissions coming from ages 11-17. There are 77 submissions that resulted from class projects, and the category most favored by our participants is, “A Thought to Live By.” The Genesis Web site will feature an update as the Genesis Grams enter the next stage of activity-chip engraving and launch aboard the spacecraft!
