This National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) Request for Applications (RFA), NSBRI-RFA-08-02, solicits proposals for an NSBRI Center of Acute Radiation Research (CARR) as part of the NSBRI Radiation Effects Team and in support of the NASA’s Human Research Program and the Space Radiation Program Element. A CARR consists of a team of investigators who have complementary skills and who work together to solve a closely focused set of research questions. The home laboratories of CARR team members may be geographically contiguous or dispersed, as long as the CARR team members have a mechanism for working together.

This RFA solicits ground-based proposals organized as a CARR addressing acute radiation effects associated to solar particle events (SPEs) utilizing beams of protons and high-energy heavy ions delivered at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, and at Loma Linda University Medical Center Proton Treatment Center in Loma Linda, California.

Studies using integrated methods are required. Proposals that synergistically bridge multiple disciplines for the purpose of understanding the risks of SPEs for acute effects to aid in the risk definition, and the development and testing of countermeasures, are the main thrusts of this RFA.

This RFA is available on the NSBRI website at www.nsbri.org/Announcements/rfa08-02.html and also through the NASA Research Opportunities NSPIRES homepage, http://nspires.nasaprs.com. From that page, link through the menu listing “Solicitations” to “Open Solicitations.” On the Open Solicitations page, select NSBRIRFA0802 from the list of Solicitations.

Notices of intent and proposals must be submitted through the NSPIRES electronic proposal submission system. Notices of intent are due March 10, 2008, and proposals are due May 8, 2008. Potential applicants are urged to access the NSPIRES site well in advance of the proposal due date to familiarize themselves with its structure and to register in the system.
