Rain flux map for July 2015 from FLDAS Noah 0.1° x 0.1° monthly product for Western Africa, forced by MERRA and CHIRPS data (forcing type “B”).

The NASA GSFC Hydrological Sciences Laboratory (HSL) and the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) are pleased to announce the release of Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) Land Data Assimilation System (FLDAS) monthly data products, and their availability from the GES DISC Hydrology FLDAS Data Holdings.

FLDAS is a custom instance of the NASA Land Information System (LIS).

This FLDAS release includes 6 monthly FLDAS data products from the Noah (0.1° x 0.1°) Land Surface Models (LSMs). Each FLDAS model has two simulation runs for the Eastern, Southern, and Western Africa regions.

The simulation runs are forced with meteorological state fields (e.g., temperature, humidity, radiation). Forcing type “A” is derived from the Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) combined with rainfall estimates calculated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Rainfall Estimation Algorithm Version 2 (RFE2). Forcing type “B” is derived from Modern Era Reanalysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) meteorological forcing combined with USGS/UCSB CHIRPS* rainfall. Each FLDAS data product contains 25 land surface status and flux fields. More information about FLDAS monthly data is available in the FLDAS README document.
