EHB Board members from the following organizations participated:

XA/Chairman, XA/Secretary, XA/Tools and Crew Aids, XA/EMU, XA/IMT, CB/Astronaut Office, EA/Engineering, EC5/EVA and IVA Equipment, MV5/FCE EVA and NA/SR&QA.

The following items were presented:

  1. Hardware Integration Schedule XA/Aaron Mears

Changes to the schedule include the following:

STS-104 (7A)

  • Standard return ship has slipped to 8/2/01.

STS-108 (UF1)

  • MPLM JSC Bench Review #2 is scheduled for 9/7/01.

  • MPLM KSC Bench Review #2 on-dock delivery is scheduled for 9/11/01.

  • CEIT ship is 9/14/01.

  • MPLM KSC Bench Review #2 is scheduled for 9/25/01.

  • CEIT for STS-108 (UF1) is pending CR sign-off.

  1. PRACA Status NS43/Terry Miller

Twelve A total of eighteen (18) FIAR’s are open for EVA hardware and are shown by flight as follows:

STS-100 (6A) 0

STS-105 (7A.1) 91

STS-108 (UF1) 14

STS-109 (HST) 17

STS-110 (8A) 17

Five FIAR’s were reported as past due. The following were statused:

JSCEC0781 — 5/16" Wobble Socket (HST). Socket detaching from PGT during SGTS-103 EVA.

An updated status will be presented to the 8/6/01 EVA Tools Panel.

JSCEC0880 — Top Mounted Passive WIF Assemblies. Anodized surface is tacky and paint is flaking off.

Closure rationale is being routed for concurrence, pending review by XA/Glenn Lutz. A clarification of procedures is required.

JSCEC0883 — PFR. While performing PIA, the roll push button was sticking.

Hardware has passed vibration testing. Thermal testing is scheduled to be performed 8/10/01. A new ECD of 8/13/01 was assigned.

JSCEC0886 — Top Mounted Handrails. Discoloration found inside handrail bracket tube and powdery substance found to be aluminum oxide during PDA.

An updated status on the handrail bracket corrosion FIAR was presented by EC5/David Glebe. At the 7/30/01 EVA Tools Panel status of this FIAR, it was determined that suspect handrails will be recalled and inspected for corrosion, and corroded brackets will be replaced if analysis and testing cannot determine whether or not corroded handrail brackets are safe to use during EVA.

In a telecon held with Aacron and Campbell Engineering earlier this week, Mr. John Ledine of Aacron confirmed that this corrosion is a common problem, which takes place during metal finishing and then stops. An inspection by EM has found the following:

  • The "white powder" is remnant of the anodizing process.

  • As long as the bracket is not pitted, then the white powder can be removed, and the bare aluminum surface can be "prepped" and alodined.

  • If the bracket is pitted, then chances of completely removing/neutralizing the corrosion are not good.

  • So far, the original bracket (that was dissected) is the worst bracket that has been examined (one bracket from each or the examined build sets have been examined.

A clear plan needs to be developed to assure that there are adequate quantities to ship out as replacements on UF1. Additionally, details need to be finalized on clean-up and inspection procedures, as well as a method of determining which brackets to "scrap" vs. "use as is". A meeting will be held with XA management to devise a plan of closure before presentation to the SSP Daily on 8/2/01.

JSCEC0874 — T-Handle. STS-100 anomaly — sticky actuation of ball.

A demonstration by EC5/Kim Hostetler shows this hardware may be "technique sensitive". Closure will include a direction for MOD to train the crew and will require concurrence by DX32/Randy McDaniel.

One new FIAR was reported:

JSCEC0889 — MMWS Gimbal Assembly. Potential failure of screws on MMWS gimbal assembly, as identified per OSS structural analysis report.

ISOD in question.

No FIAR’s are open for STS-100.

STS-104 (7A) FIAR’s were statused as follows:

JSCEC0839 — REBA Charger. REBA failed to show green LED during acceptance testing.

EC5/ Hiep Nguyen will be going to the contractor (Summit) 5/4/01.

JSCEC0863F — Modular Gimbal Assy. End effector is sticking/not closing (STS-98 anomaly).

EC5/Roger Schwarz reported that he is getting more information from Oceaneering. There may be a "broke" in configuration control. Getting story.

BFCE026A024 — High Strength Bridge Clamp. Unlock push button will not extend.

EC5/Roger Schwarz reported the hardware is going through vibe testing this week.

STS-105 (7A.1) FIAR’s were statused as follows:

BFCE029F105 — Pistol Grip Tool (PGT). PGT Chatter.

EC5/Roger Schwarz reported this FIAR is still unexplained. The PGT will be shipped for MPLM Bench Review the end of the month. Interims will be written within the next 2 weeks. Hardware is to be left on-orbit.

The Chairman requested a note be added to the status to show dates interims are needed, shipping on open DR, etc.

The oldest FIAR, against the 5/16" Hex Wobble Socket, is 586 days old.

  1. Certification Status NS22/Greg Wright

All certification is closed for STS-105 (7A.1). Open certification for STS-108 (UF1) includes the PFR bridge clamp, body restraint tether (BRT) and SAFER. BRT and SAFER certification are pending ESEL updates. There are 13 open certification items for STS-109, with due dates to S&MA of 11/16/01.

  1. EMU RDR and Certification Status NS22/Charles Sager

EMU RDR’s open by flight are as follows:

STS-105 (7A.1) 0

STS-108 (UF1) 24

STS-109 (HST) 1

The PSA 28V utility adapter open certification for STS-105 (7A.1) was a late turn-on item. There is one remaining test, and given a good outcome, paperwork will go to S&MA on Friday, 8/3/01. There are two open certification items for STS-108 (UF1). The athletic support assembly will be demanifested on the UF1 ESEL Revision 2; MAG’s are being used. The in line voltage regulator CR will be revised. There is no open certification to report for STS-109.
