The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) was held in Johannesburg between 26 August and 4 September 2002. ESA was present at this important gathering with a delegation of experts to demonstrate the usefulness of space technologies and applications to sustainable development.

An exhibition on ESA’s main programmes was located in Ubuntu Village, at the heart of the Summit venue. ESA also showed the launch of the MSG weather satellite on 28 August to WSSD delegates. MSG will observe the whole African continent and play a vital role for African waeather forecasting.

Today’s ESA TV Exchange outlines ESA’s position on how space applications can contribute to sustainable development. It includes soundbites with ESA’s Director of Earth Observation, Jose Achache.

The Exchange contains split audio with an English guide track. The script is on-line as a PDF document under http://television.esa.int/photos/EbS26155.pdf

This ESA TV Exchanges feed is transmitted by the European Commission’s “Europe by Satellite” (EbS) service. You can find the complete transmission schedule and download scripts and shot lists, also for ESA TV items, from the EbS Web site at http://europa.eu.int/comm/ebs/index.
