Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, flooding, forest fires
when major catastrophes strike, emergency operations require first and foremost precise information to act efficiently.

Since November 2000, an International Space and major Disasters Charter, has been operational, coordinating all available space resources worldwide each time a catastrophe arises.

The Charter has been triggered more than 70 times, the last time during the Tsunami that struck southeast Asia at Christmas. Today’s Programme outlines how ESA’s ESRIN Establishment contributes to the work of the Charter, and how satellite data are made available to relief organisations and civil protection agencies.

The script is on-line as a PDF document under http://television.esa.int/photos/EbS38044.pdf
