Significant events identified by Satellite Analysis Branch meteorologists and reviewed by the
Operational Significant Event Imagery support team Friday, August 8, 2003 are as follows:
FIRES IN PORTUGAL AND SPAIN

Heat signatures (red), burn scars (charcoal to dark green), and smoke (light blue haze) are visible
from fires burning in Portugal and Spain in this NOAA-16 image. Infernos which have killed 15
people continued across vast areas Friday, with Portugal declaring a national disaster. About
54,000 hectares (133,000 acres) have burned.

Typhoon 11W (Etau) was located over the East China Sea near 33.3N 134.0E at 06:00 UTC.
Etau has been moving northeastward at 15 knots with maximum sustained winds estimated at 90
knots, gusts to 110 knots.

SMOKE FROM FIRES BURNING IN BRITISH COLUMBIA

Clouds cover the heat signatures from several fires burning in British Columbia. Smoke
(indicated by the yellow arrow) is visible from fires burning north of Kamloops. According to
officials, the wildfires raging throughout both provinces are considered the worst in the region in
50 years.
