Significant events identified by Satellite Analysis Branch meteorologists and reviewed by the
Operational Significant Event Imagery support team Friday, August 15, 2003 are as follows:
FIRES IN BRITISH COLUMBIA AND ALBERTA, CANADA AND IN MONTANA

color composite<>Montana, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada
Heat signatures (red) and smoke plumes (light blue haze) are visible from fires burning in
Montana, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada. The Wedge Canyon Fire (36,165 acres) and
the Robert Fire (38,751 acres) have charred areas of Flathead National Forest. The Trapper
Creek Complex Fire has scorched 22,551 acres in Glacier National Park. This information is

Heat signatures and smoke plumes (light blue haze) are visible from several fires burning in
Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. The Boles/Rattlesnake Complex Fire has charred 12,800 acres
about 20 miles northeast of Missoula, MT. The Fish Creek Fire has scorched 6,500 acres of Lolo
National Forest. The Gold 1 Fire has charred 4,500 acres in Bitterroot National Forest. The East
Fire has burned 3,200 acres in Yellowstone National Park. This information is from the National

Tropical Storm Erika was located over the Gulf of Mexico near 26.1N 91.4W at 15:00 UTC.
Erika has been moving westward at 20 knots with maximum sustained winds estimated at 45
knots, gusts to 55 knots.
