SUBJECT: Retirement of William E. Berry

The Center Deputy Director, William E. “Bill” Berry has announced
that he will retire from federal service on May 3, 2002.

Mr. Berry began his federal career as a co-op student with NASA at
the Johnson Space Center in 1962-64. After graduation from the
DDrexel Institute of Technology, he returned to NASA at the Ames
Research Center in 1966 and served in many key technical and
management roles including Chief of the Advanced Life Support
Division and of the Life Science Flight Project Office. He acted as
Director of the Space Research Directorate for 2 years and was the
Associate Center Director for Institutional Management before being
named as Center Deputy Director in 1997. He has also served at NASA
Headquarters in 1993-94 as the Deputy Director of the Life &
Biomedical Sciences and Applications Division. He is a 1986 graduate
of Stanford University’s prestigious Sloan Program.

Some of Mr. Berry’s important contributions to the Center have been
made in the Bio-Satellite, Mars Viking, and Pioneer Venus projects.
He led the Center’s development of its on-going life science flight
experiments activities on Shuttle, Mir, and the International Space
Station. Most recently, he has been the leader in the beginnings of
the transformation of the Ames Moffett complex into the NASA Research
Park, a world-renowned research and development complex through
partnerships with industry, academic and other government agencies.

Mr. Berry received the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive in
1996, the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal in 1998 and the
Presidential Rank of Distinguished Executive in 2001.

Throughout his career, Bill has been an exceptional individual and a
dedicated civil servant. His contributions to the Center have been
both many and outstanding. In recent years, he has been a highly
valued member of the Center’s senior management team and a prime
mover in the NASA Research Park. He will be greatly missed, but we
wish him continued success in all his endeavors as he retires from
the Agency.

Details regarding a farewell event are still being prepared. They
will be announced as soon as they are available.

Until a permanent appointment is made, Nancy Bingham, Associate
Director for Systems Management & Planning, will serve as Acting
Deputy Director when Mr. Berry retires.
