On 31 October ESA astronaut Claudie Haigneré and her two Russian colleagues were welcomed back to Earth after successfully delivering a new ‘lifeboat’ to the International Space Station.

Together with fellow crew members Commander Victor Afanassiev and Flight Engineer Konstantin Kozeev, French born ESA astronaut Claudie spent eight days on board the Space Station. The Andromède crew’s prime objective was to deliver the Station’s new lifeboat and exchange it for an older Soyuz vehicle which had been attached to the Station for the past six months, for their lift back to Earth.

Whilst on board the astronauts also performed a range of experiments in life sciences, biology, materials science and Earth observation – some of them in concert with young people from French schools and colleges.

Claudie made history as the first European woman to visit the Space Station and also as the first non-Russian woman astronaut to fly in a Soyuz spacecraft as Flight Engineer.

This 10-minute video co-produced with the French Space Agency CNES provides a summary of the mission, including unique in-flight video images brought back in the Soyuz capsule. The English voiceover of the transmission is based on a presentation given by Claudie Haigneré at ESA’s Ministerial Council meeting.

The script of the programme will be posted on line tomorrow under http://television.esa.int/photos/EbS22548.pdf.
