Our ASGSR is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors elected for three-year terms on a staggered-year basis. Of these, four board member terms will expire in November 2012. Our society will hold elections in the fall for these positions and the term starts December 2, 2012. We will also hold elections for a president-elect 2013. As part of the process of adding physical sciences to the scope of interest for ASGSR, the next few years we will be expanding the breadth of the Board of Governors to ensure representation from both the biological and physical sciences communities. This first year of the expansion, we will add 1 physical scientist position to the membership of the board in one of the slots to be elected this year. We seek at least two physical scientists to run as candidates for this slot on the board.

Board Member Information:

Each board member is expected to participate in two face-to-face board meetings each year; one in Washington, D.C. in the spring; and the other at the annual meeting. Board member participation in these meetings is critical, since we make many decisions for the society at these meetings, and also discuss and establish new policies. We do not encourage telecon participation for the board meetings. The spring 2013 board meeting has been scheduled for March 11-13th, 2013 in Arlington, VA. Travel expenses will be reimbursed by the society for the spring meeting. Board members are also expected to serve on at least one ASGSR committee and serve as judges for the annual student poster competition. Once elected as a board member, that member is eligible to be a candidate for President of the Society. Please refer to the constitution on the ASGSR web site for specific responsibilities. Interested candidates should:

* Be a regular or retired member in good standing. Note: retired members can also hold board positions (constitutional amendment Spring 2012).
* Be willing and able to actively serve the Board and ASGSR for the full three-year term
* Hold senior/executive level leadership positions in his/her organization
* Have demonstrated an interest in the advancement of gravitational research
* Have a connection to some part of the research or aerospace community, including, but not limited to, government, private industry, academia, or other non-profit sectors.
* Student members are not eligible to run for the board, but can be elected to the student society, contact the ASGSR student president, Christina Johnson at johns248@muohio.edu for more information.

If you are interested in nominating yourself, or someone from your organization or company, please forward that interest, together with a short bio of the individual to Jobi Cook at asgsr@rocketmail.com by September 15th. All nominated candidates will be contacted by Dr. Joe Tash, chair of the nominating committee to verify their willingness serve if elected, before they can be placed on the ballot.

The results of the election, based on the ballot results, will be announced at the ASGSR annual meeting dinner held Sunday, December 1st, 2012 in New Orleans. Newly elected board members are expected to participate in the first board meeting the next day on Sunday, December 2nd. It is highly encouraged that if you interested in running for the board, you should be present at the annual meeting.

Current members whose terms expire this year are:

Paul Todd – through 2012, Techshot
Kevin Sato – through 2012, Lockheed-Martin, Mountainview, CA (note: Kevin only served a one year term to replace Joe Tash, and was elected to this position November 2011)
Cary A. Mitchell – through 2012, Purdue University
Jack J.W.A. van Loon — through 2012, VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Board members whose terms expire in 2013 and 2104:

Jeff Smith – through 2014, NASA-Ames Research Center
Elison Blancaflor – through 2014, The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation
Marcia Harrison – through 2014, Marshall University
Melanie Correll – through 2014, University of Florida
Gioia Donna Massa – through 2013, Purdue University
Robert C. Morrow – through 2013, Orbital Technologies Corp.
Barry H. Pyle – through 2013, Montana State University
Heike Sederoff – through 2013, North Carolina State University

President-Elect 2013:

ASGSR is also seeking nominations for the office of President Elect 2013 of ASGSR. This is a three-year commitment since the president-elect serves on the executive committee of the ASGSR as president-elect, president and past-president. The president-elect has several duties during the year to assist the society, including serving as chair of the nominating committee. The president term is one year, so this election is for the ASGSR 2014 president. The candidate must have served as a member of the board, either presently or in the past. The role of the President is to provide leadership in the oversight for the business, functions, programs, and activities of the Society. The President also serves as chair of the annual meeting, two years past their expired term.

Regards, and thank you for your continued active membership participation with the ASGSR.
