AAAS’ FY 2002 R&D Budget Analysis
On January 10, President Bush signed the last of the FY 2002
budget bills into law. AAAS members are invited to visit the
AAAS website for our analysis of this year’s budgeted
expenditures on R&D. The AAAS Science and Policy Program
Directorate began publishing federal budget numbers for R&D in
1976. Today, the AAAS R&D web site provides comprehensive,
real-time coverage of the federal investment in R&D, with detailed
coverage of historical trends, major agency programs, and special
issues such as counter-terrorism R&D and R&D earmarks.
Go directly to the 2002 R&D analysis at
http://www.aaas.org/spp/dspp/rd/fy02.htm or start at the aaas.org
home page, click on the “Science and Society” link and follow the
links to “R&D Budget.”
Federal funding for R&D will increase to more than $100 billion
for the first time in 2002 — the largest dollar amount in history
($103.7 billion) and the largest percentage increase in nearly 20
years (13.5 percent). Learn the reasons for this historic increase by
examining the full text of the annual AAAS wrap-up of the federal
budget process and its implications for R&D online on the AAAS
R&D web site.
Other AAAS activities related to federal R&D spending include:
* A printed edition of the report will be available later this month
at a discount for AAAS members.
* Members may sign up for email alerts on major funding
developments by signing the guest book on the AAAS R&D site.
* AAAS will host the 27th Annual Colloquium on Science and
Technology Policy on April 11-12 in Washington, DC. Discounted
registration is available for AAAS members.
* Look for reports on the FY 2003 R&D budget shortly after
President Bush announces his proposals in February.
