A number of commercial off-the-shelf products are used every day in space. One example is Sharpie brand marker pens.
In this photo European Space Agency Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti aboard the International Space Station on 29 December 2014, performs maintenance on a controller panel assembly in the Tranquility module. Life on board the ISS is one of constant maintenance and working with science experiments. You can see several SHarpie pens attached by Velcro to the inner surface of Tranquility.
