NASA ISS On-Orbit Status 25 August 2014
In the International Space Station's Kibo laboratory, European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst, Expedition 40 flight engineer, depressurizes the Kibo airlock in preparation for a series of NanoRacks CubeSat miniature satellite deployments. The first two pairs of nanosatellites are scheduled for deployment on Aug. 19. The Planet Labs Dove satellites that were carried to the station aboard the Orbital Sciences Cygnus commercial cargo craft are being deployed between Aug. 19 and Aug. 25. Credit: NASA.

Today: NanoRacks Inadvertent Deploy: On Saturday, ground teams observed the inadvertent deploy of two Cosmogia CubeSats from Deployer #5 of the NanoRack Cubesat Deployer (NRCSD).
The ISS was still in the deploy attitude and the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Remote Manipulator System (JEMRMS) was still positioned for the deployment. No issues have been identified with the deployment trajectory, the CubeSats or the ISS. Ground teams are investigating the probable cause and discussing future operations with the NRCSD and CubeSats remaining in the deployer.

Microbiome Sample Collection: Over the weekend, Flight Engineer (FE)-6 Gerst started collecting samples for the Microbiome investigation. The experiment investigates the impact of space travel on both the human immune system and an individual’s microbiome (the collection of microbes that live in and on the human body at any given time).

Electromagnetic Levitation (EML) Installation: Gerst removed the axial camera controller from the EML Experiment Module to access a bolt that the crew found partially extended last week, which impeded the installation of the axial camera. Today’s steps to remove the bolt were unsuccessful, and ground teams are assessing future troubleshooting steps. Once EML is completely installed it will aim to increase the performance of metallic/alloy structures through an understanding of how solidification can be controlled and develop a data base of properties to allow better process modeling. The experiment investigates solidification and microstructural evolution and evaluates thermo-physical properties of highly reactive molten metals.

Earth Rim Setup: Gerst set up cameras in the Cupola to take sequential pictures of the Earth’s rim. The images will be taken in conjunction with the nadir-pointing Visible and Infrared Spectral Imager (VISI) on the external Multi-mission Consolidated Equipment (MCE). This will give the ground stereoscopic images to clarify the structures and dynamics of the Earth’s upper atmosphere using the emission of the airglow and the aurora.

FLame Extinguishment Experiment (FLEX)-2 Operations: FE-5 Wiseman removed the Combustion Integration Rack (CIR) alignment guides, which will isolate the rack and allow ground teams to conduct another FLEX-2 test point via ground commanding. Toluene and heptane were used for these test points. FLEX-2 uses small droplets of fuel to study the special burning characteristics of fire in space. The FLEX-2 experiment studies the rate and manner in which fuel is burned, the conditions that are necessary for soot to form, and the way in which a mixture of fuels evaporate before burning. The results from these experiments will give scientists a better understanding how fires behave in space and will provide important information that will be useful in increasing the fuel efficiency of engines using liquid fuels.

Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Fan Pump Separator (FPS) Remove & Replace (R&R): Wiseman gathered required tools and he and Commander (CDR) Swanson started replacing the FPS in Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) 3011. They will complete this activity tomorrow.
