Installing The Heat Shield On EM-1 Orion

Heat shield back shell panels are prefitted on the Orion spacecraft at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

The back shell panels serve as the outer layer of the spacecraft and will protect it against the extreme temperatures of re-entry from deep space. Orion is being prepared for its first integrated uncrewed flight atop NASA’s Space Launch System rocket on Exploration Mission-1 from Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center.
