Astronaut Alexander Gerst of ESA (European Space Agency) checks a culture bag for the Space Algae experiment.
This experiment is exploring the potential of cultivating algae for recycling carbon dioxide and providing food for crew members on long space voyages. The culture bags are placed in the VEGGIE facility to promote growth over a few weeks with the samples returned to Earth for analysis.
