Video: ULA Innovation – Vulcan SMART Reusability

United Launch Alliance (ULA) has released its latest video in its Innovation at ULA series. In this video we see how the booster stage main engines are recovered for reuse as part of their Sensible, Modular, Autonomous Return Technology (SMART) initiative.
The initiative is in response to SpaceX’s program to return the first stage of their Falcon rocket for reuse. According to ULA, their initiative will provide greater savings than the SpaceX approach. Both approaches have yet to be realized, but should either or both work this should benefit their customers in reduced launch costs.
