The Space Community is set to Descend on Colorado Springs for the National Space Symposium
After it appeared there was a slight dip in attendance the past few years, this years National Space Symposium, the 30th edition, has attracted a record number of top-level U.S. speakers according to the Space Foundation and could top 9,000 participants.
The Symposium which includes several affiliated events begins on Sunday, May 18th with the Space Generation Fusion Forum 2014, an affiliated event co-sponsored by the Space Generation Council, and runs through Thursday, May 22nd.
The annual Symposium is located at the picturesque Broadmoor Hotel nestled in the shadow of Cheyenne Mountain.
Monday, May 19th sees a full day of space intersecting cyberspace with the 4th edition of “Cyber”, dubbed “Cyber 1.4”.
Featuring government, military and industry leaders, Cyber 1.4’s opening speaker is Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX), Chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee U.S. House of Representatives.
Other notable speakers on the first day include Maj. Gen. James K. “Kevin” McLaughlin, USAF, Commander, 24th Air Force and Air Forces Cyber and Maj. Gen. Craig S. Olson, USAF Program Executive Officer, C3I and Networks, Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass.
Panels for Cyber 1.4 include; Truths and Myths About Cyber Defense and Offense, Government and Industry Working Together in the Cyber Domain, Acquisition, Command and Control at the Speed of Light, Emerging Trends in Cyber Ops and Protocols and We’re All in This Together: a Shared Stake in a More Secure Cyber Domain.
There’s a long list of military brass who will be in attendance, all who will speak at some point during the Symposium.
After Cyber 1.4 concludes, the official opening of the Symposium will take place in the evening and includes a performance by David Arkenstone & Cirque de la Symphonie: A Cosmic Concert Event.
On Tuesday the general program begins along with a Technical Track, Classified Sessions, affiliated events including an Export Control Reform Workshop and the New Generation Space Leaders Program.
Also in attendance will be Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper who on Tuesday, May 20th at 11:40 a.m. local time will sign the bill HB14-1178 “Sales and Use Tax Exemption for Space Flight Property” by Representatives Mark Ferrandino and Brian DelGrosso and Senators Mary Hodge and Kevin Grantham. The event will take place in the Symposium’s Boeing Exhibit Center at the Colorado Space Coalition booth (#124).
The Governor will then speak at the Symposium’s Space Warfighters Luncheon at The Broadmoor’s Colorado Hall beginning at 12:15.
The Symposium is also attracting more foreign participation this year and includes a Space Agency Leaders panel moderated by Yasushi Horikawa, Ph.D., Chairman, United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and includes:
