Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the global leader in broadband satellite solutions and services, today hosted its 17th annual technology seminar in Moscow, Russia, at which over 100 senior-level representatives from the telecom business, service providers, government officials and media gathered to discuss major industry developments and prospects for commercial broadband satellite technology in the Russia/CIS region.
Hughes, a pioneer in high-speed satellite Internet technology, recently shipped its 4 millionth satellite terminal, representing approximately 50 percent global market share (Comsys Report, 13th Edition, 2013). In Russia and the CIS countries, a strategically important region for Hughes, the company continues to lead the market with approximately 55,000 satellite terminals shipped to more than 20 service provider customers representing over 50 percent market share.

“This conference is focused on high-throughput satellite technology, which is the most cost-effective means to close the digital divide for consumers and businesses outside urban areas,” said Dr. Arunas Slekys, vice president of Russia/CIS, for Hughes. “And as the first-ever Ka-band satellite service in Russia is soon to be launched, Hughes stands ready to power it with our industry-leading JUPITER™ technology, the same as that which today is the primary platform for the world’s largest satellite Internet service — HughesNet® in North America, now with over 900,000 subscribers.”

Hughes executives showcased how governments and businesses of all sizes and across all sectors are employing the company’s broadband satellite solutions to boost efficiencies, enhance training, increase access to information and respond to emergencies. For a country such as Russia, with a vast territory and population, satellite technology is essential to connect its people and power economic development through high-speed Internet access.

A highlight of the seminar was a panel of key leaders in the telecom and satellite sectors who discussed some of the issues and constraints facing Russia’s industry, which was followed by an engaging Q&A session with the audience.

Closing the event, Konstantin Lanin, head of the Hughes office in Moscow commented, “Hughes is honored to continue this tradition of sharing views on important technology and business issues in this rapidly developing marketplace, and I welcome all to explore our many innovative offerings and the excellent technical support provided by our talented team in Moscow.”
