Directly above base camp is the notorious Khumbu Icefall. Perhaps as famous as Everest itself, it is the most unpredictable and deadly section of the climb. On the trek to BC I’d asked Eric what the most stressful part of being expedition leader was. He told me the Khumbu Icefall was always on his mind. He lost a dearly loved friend and Sherpa, Ang Phinjo, in the icefall in 2006. Russell Brice normally climbs the north side of Everest, in part to avoid the icefall. Now, forced to climb the south side, he’s planning to keep his team out of the ice for as long as possible. [More at Discovery]
