Veteran Air Force Leader Joins Space Foundation –General Howell M. Estes III will serve three- year term

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (October 26, 2001) –
Retired Air Force Gen. Howell M. Estes III was
recently elected to the Space Foundation Board
of Directors, according to Space Foundation
officials. Gen. Estes will serve a three-year
term on the board of the national non-profit
organization.

“We are extremely fortunate to have a leader as
widely respected as General Howell Estes join
our Space Foundation board, ” said Chairman
Jaime Oaxaca. “He is known throughout the space
industry for his incredible vision, and the
Foundation will benefit greatly from his
experience and distinguished perspective.”

A command pilot with more than 4,500 flying
hours, Gen. Estes’ military assignments included
director for operations (J-3), the Joint Staff
at the Pentagon; and most recently commander in
chief, North American Aerospace Defense Command
(CINCNORAD) and United States Space Command
(USCINCSPACE), and commander, Air Force Space
Command (COMAFSPC), headquartered at Peterson
Air Force Base, Colo. He currently heads Howell
Estes & Associates, Inc. and resides in Colorado
Springs.

Gen. Estes earned a bachelor of science degree
in military science, United States Air Force
Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. and a master of
arts degree in public administration, Auburn
University, Ala. He also completed Air Command
and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.
and National War College, Fort Lesley J. McNair,
Washington, D.C.

Commenting on his selection, Gen. Estes said,
“The Space Foundation has had a growing impact
on promoting space for the betterment of all
mankind. It touches every sector, private,
civil, and national security, both nationally
and internationally. I am honored to join the
Foundation’s Board of Directors and will strive
to insure continued growth of this prestigious
organization.”

International Space Symposium is quickly gaining
similar acclaim. The global space conference,
“Where Space Means Business,” is built around
two and a half days of in-depth discussion,

heads of agencies, financiers, managers,

2001 International Space Symposium will be held
at the Reagan International Trade Center in
