Charles Kelly Scharmann and Michael James Garrett receive Silver Snoopy award

Fairfax, Virginia-November 13, 2009 NASA has awarded its “Silver Snoopy” to QinetiQ North America’s Michael Garrett and Charles Kelly Scharmann. The Silver Snoopy is a special honor awarded by NASA astronauts to NASA employees and contractors for outstanding achievements related to human flight safety or mission success. Distribution of the Silver Snoopy awards are limited to no more than one percent of eligible recipients and an individual can only receive one Silver Snoopy award in their lifetime. Cartoonist Charles Shultz, a longtime enthusiast for space flight, designed the award in the 1960s.

Astronaut Mike Massimino presented engineering technician Charles Kelly Scharmann a Silver Snoopy at Goddard Space Flight Center on July 23, 2009. The entire STS-125 crew was in attendance to recognize Scharmann’s work on the manufacture, modification, integration and installation of the Hubble Space Telescope Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory mockup hardware. His efforts ensured the astronauts received critical training for five successful Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions.

Electrical engineer Michael Garrett received his Silver Snoopy at NASA Glenn Research Center on October 28, 2009. Garrett’s award cites his outstanding leadership of the contractor team of engineers, technicians and other support staff ensuring safety and technical excellence during the very tight Fluids and Combustion Facility (FCF) development schedule. His leadership was instrumental to the delivery of a safe, functional International Space Station payload.
