The Canadian Space Commerce Association (CSCA), Canada’s national space industry association, announced today their support of the recommendations included in the Government of Canada’s report Consultations on Canada’s Future In Space: What We Heard, Space Advisory board, August 2017

As part of the broader Innovation and Skills Plan, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development tasked the Space Advisory Board to engage with Canadians as the Government develops a national space strategy. As such, the Board consulted nationally with Canadian space sector stakeholders to provide relevant and informed advice to the Minister about the Canadian space program.

The report, entitled identifies six issues for the Government to consider as it develops a new space strategy:

  • designating the space sector as a national strategic asset that’s essential for Canada’s sovereignty, security and economic growth;
  • strengthening the capacity of Canada’s space sector to compete globally;
  • adopting new policies and regulations to capitalize on the development of new space technologies;
  • maintaining well-balanced government programming to support the space sector;
  • renewing public education and outreach programs to inspire the next generation of Canadians; and
  • revitalizing Canada’s space program to ensure it remains responsive and relevant to its international partners.

“The report released today by the Government of Canada demonstrates that stakeholders across the nation have a strong desire for a robust Canadian space strategy,” said Dr. Yaroslav Pustovyi, Chairman of the Canadian Space Commerce Association. “It is with great enthusiasm that the CSCA commits to continue to support the Government of Canada in its crafting of our national space strategy. Our Canadian space sector, branded in the report as essential, is on an intense growth trajectory, developing the technologies and organizations that will bring Canadians long-term economic and societal benefit. Our CSCA membership includes the best and brightest in space technology and services. A focus on the report’s six key issues for consideration will substantially fuel our membership’s ability to advance Canada’s sovereignty, security and economy. A coordinated focus and effective, rapid deployment of practical programs to address these issues is imperative for us to meet the Canadian space industry’s true potential.”
