Two students from Cuyahoga Community College, Maura L. Robison and John D. Powers, were awarded National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/Ohio Space Grant Consortium Community College Scholarships, while another student, Teresa Floyd, was awarded the Morris K. Udall Environmental Scholarship. It is the first time that Tri-C students have received either scholarship.

Robison, a Westlake resident, and Powers, a Parma Heights native, were each awarded $1,000 NASA/Ohio Space Grant Consortium Community College Scholarships. Robison, a math major, and Powers, a construction engineering technology major, both attend Tri-C’s Western Campus in Parma.

The Ohio Space Grant Consortium (OSGC) and its member community colleges provide financial support through competitively-awarded scholarships. Each one-year, non-renewable scholarship is for a sophomore student. Students should have the intention to continue for a four-year degree at an OSGC institution. The scholarship program is open to students currently enrolled in a program of study at one of the six OSGC-member community colleges.

Floyd, a Cleveland resident, was the recipient of a $5,000 Morris K. Udall Environmental Scholarship. An environmental, health and safety technology major, Floyd also received an all-expenses-paid, four-day scholar orientation trip to Tucson, Arizona. Floyd, a licensed lead (Pb) risk assessor and community outreach specialist in Cleveland, is scheduled to complete Tri-C’s program this fall at the Eastern Campus in Highland Hills.

The Morris K. Udall Foundation selected 80 students from 64 colleges and universities as 2008 Udall Scholars. Winners were selected from among 510 candidates nominated by 239 colleges and universities. The Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation was authorized by Congress in 1992 to honor Congressman Udall’s legacy of public service.
