Data from Equator-S and Geotail have provided long-sought proof that what
we now know as “space weather” in the near-earth environment — magnetic
storms, aurorae, etc. — is caused by magnetic reconnection events. You’ll
need the Adobe Acrobat reader to see this story at

More planetary pics: lava flows, cliffs and depressions from collapsed
volcanic eruptions are seen in new images of Jupiter’s moon Io, taken by
our Galileo spacecraft during its most recent flyby on February 22. There’s
also a new high-resolution view of the side of Europa that faces Jupiter.

In early March, an announcement was made about a new method of “seeing
through the Sun”, using SOHO data, to provide advance warning of solar
storms. Now, it seems, there is another technique to do effectively the
same thing, using a different SOHO instrument.

On its way to Saturn, Cassini has made it through the asteroid belt. It
didn’t run into any protesters either. Only 4 years until Saturn arrival!

A new device that safely strips paint from the hulls of ships without
polluting the environment is based on NASA robotics technology.
