Space Foundation’s Space in the Classroom Conference Offers Unique Professional Development Opportunities for K-12 Educators
An impressive list of
speakers, instructors and the latest technologies will be extended to K-12
educators during the Space Foundation’s Space in the Classroom (SITC) educator
conference, intended to Launch Learning Excitement(TM) in the classroom.
The
conference will take place February 22-24, 2001 at the United States Air Force
Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Conference registrants will experience two-and-one-half days of hands-on
continuing education training, including a half-day of optional tours, and
learn how the excitement of space — and NASA’s five Strategic Enterprises —
can motivate and inspire students.
Optional tours include the USAFA, Lockheed
Martin, Boeing Pueblo plant where Delta rockets are assembled, Air Force Space
Command (Schriever AFB), and Cheyenne Mountain Air Station (NORAD).
Conference speakers include JoAnn Morgan, NASA Director, External
Relations and Business Development; Dr. Kathie Olsen, NASA Chief Scientist;
Dr. Guion “Guy” Bluford, former NASA Astronaut; Andre Bormanis, Star Trek
Science Advisor; Bill Nye, “The Science Guy” (invited); and Tim Russ, Star
Trek Voyager star (invited).

Elementary, middle school and high school educators from 14 states and
Canada are already scheduled to attend the Space in the Classroom conference,
while 350 total registrants are expected, according to the Space Foundation.
The SITC conference is accepted for continuing education credits to
participating teachers in most school districts.
The Space Foundation provides quality space education programs to
educators nationwide.
The Foundation team has trained more than 12,000
teachers since 1986 through Space Discovery graduate courses, Teaching With
Space in-services, and national conferences.
