Space Foundation Announces Winner of Annual Education Achievement Award
Colorado Springs, Colo. (January 12, 2001) – The
Space Foundation announced today that the
Lockheed Martin Space Day Program has been
selected to receive this year’s Space Foundation
Education Achievement Award. Lockheed Martin
was selected for its exceptional achievement in
promoting excellence in K-12 education through
its Space Day program.
Now in its fifth year, Space Day is an
international celebration of the accomplishments
and opportunities in space exploration. Space
Day is intended to advance math, science and
technology education and to inspire young people
to realize the vision of our space pioneers.
Space Day Co-Chair and Senator John Glenn joins
60 Space Day Partners who support this massive
grassroots educational initiative.
“We are very pleased that Space Day has been
honored with this prestigious award. We have
worked hard with our Partners to create this
unique opportunity to demonstrate our commitment
to math, science and technology education,” said
Vance Coffman, Chairman and CEO of Lockheed
Martin and the founder of Space Day.
The award will be presented during a recognition
luncheon on February 23, 2001, during the Space
in the Classroom Conference. Space in the
Classroom, which intends to Launch Learning
Excitement(tm) for K-12 educators, will take
place February 22-24, 2001 at the United States
Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. The
national conference is hosted by the Space
Foundation.
Additionally, a video of the award presentation
will be shown during the 17th National Space
Symposium. The symposium, which gathers top
space leaders from industry, the military and
government, is also hosted by the Space
Foundation and takes place April 9-12, 2001, at
the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs.
The Space Foundation annually presents the
Education Achievement Award to organizations
that demonstrate involvement in exemplary
education initiatives for the purpose of
motivating young people to excel in space-based
education. Previous recipients include the
Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, Challenger
Center, Lowell Observatory and the Chicago
Museum of Science and Industry.
The Space Foundation provides quality space
education programs to educators nationwide. The

teachers since 1986 through Space Discovery
graduate courses, Teaching With Space in-
