Results of Landsat-5 Observations of the Miyakejima Area

The National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) announced that
as the result of satellite image taken by the LANDSAT-5 satellite of
the Miyakejima* area and the spreading of the volcanic smoke and ash
around the island was able to be seen from the picture around 9:54 a.m.
on August 28, 2000.

The image shows that on August 28, the day when large numbers of people
in the Kanto area complained of strange smells in the air, smoke from
the eruption of Miyakejima extended over the sky in a northwest direction
like a band, as far as the Izu Peninsula and further towards Sagami Bay.

Note: LANDSAT-5 is an earth observation satellite launched by the United
States in March of 1984 , capable of recording images with a ground
resolution of 30 meters.

*Miyakejima: An island located approximately 180km southwest of Tokyo and
is now erupting intermittently (Mt.Oyama Volcano).
