House Science Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) and Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee Chairman Ken Calvert (R-CA) today issued the following statement in response to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) announcement regarding the loss of foam during yesterday’s launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery:

“NASA is handling this situation exactly as it should.  It has analyzed the data and has grounded future Space Shuttle flights.  The foam has been the primary concern ever since the loss of the Columbia.  Obviously, this problem needs to be addressed before the Shuttle can fly again.  We are all relieved that the astronauts do not appear to be in any danger.  We all wish NASA the best in figuring out how to deal with this complex problem.  All we can do at this point is wait and let the technical experts work the problem.  We congratulate Administrator Griffin and all of the NASA team for the forthright way they are handling this setback.”
