Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Corona) extends his congratulations to NASA for today’s successful launch. Rep. Calvert, who is the Chairman of the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee, watched the launch from Washington, DC.

“It was inspirational to watch the shuttle launch today,” said Rep. Calvert. “Today’s return to flight is a testament to the hard work and courage of Discovery’s crew and the entire NASA workforce. After the Columbia Tragedy, NASA improved its safety protocols and changed its assumptions about how to prepare for human space flight. The NASA culture has been reinvigorated and has regained some of the focus it had lost. America can be proud that we continue to lead the world in space exploration.”

The shuttle launched around 10:38 a.m. EDT and separated from the fuel boosters around 10 minutes later. The seven-person crew will conduct saftey tests and deliver supplies to the International Space Station. The shuttle is schedule to return on August 7, 2005.

“I hope for a successful mission and a safe return,” continued Rep. Calvert.
