Public Information Officer – National Radio Astronomy Observatory

SUMMARY: Responsible for the Observatory’s media relations, publicity, and
government and community relations. Serves as a designated point of contact
for inquiries and contacts with news media personnel, the general public,
and government/community officials and organizations.

Oversees and helps produce Observatory promotional and informational
pamphlets, brochures, posters, and displays. Through collaboration with
staff scientists, will prepare news articles on research being conducted at
the NRAO, in particular focusing on the ALMA Project, GBT research, and NRAO
administration. Will maintain contact with print and electronic media
representatives and support the existing public relations and outreach
efforts within NRAO.

Will serve as a coordinator for various NRAO EPO projects. Will have
the opportunity to help set future directions and create new programs within
an expanding public relations effort by NRAO. Provides PIO support for the
Director’s Office.

QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of three years experience as a
professional scientific writer or public relations representative, and a
strong background in the physical sciences (preferably at the college level)
are required. Experience directly related to astronomical research would be
desirable. Proven experience with web site usage for technical and general
purposes for a scientific organization is also required. The candidate must
be available for occasional travel. Excellent written and oral
communications skills required.
